Sumil Patel

Sumil joined Independent Tax in August 2025 following a career at HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and in private practice, bringing over a decade of experience in complex tax investigations and strategic compliance with him.

During his time at HMRC, Sumil qualified as an Inspector of Taxes and led multi-disciplinary enquiries into mid-sized businesses and their owner managers, often involving offshore structures and high-risk tax behaviour. His work regularly intersected with the Fraud Investigation Service.

Whilst in private practice, Sumil has been involved with managing disclosures and enquiries of various kinds into clients, achieving successful outcomes to mitigate tax, interest and penalties. He has also advised on employee share schemes, company valuations and R&D claims.

Outside of work, Sumil is interested in football, cricket, history and movies.
