Taran joined Independent Tax in November 2024 after spending 9 years working for HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). He was one of very few fully trained HMRC inspectors who had an accountancy background.

He qualified as a Direct Tax Specialist in corporation tax (CT) having spent most of his time leading cross-tax enquiries into Owner-Managed Businesses and their Directors. This required a broad range of tax knowledge, whilst utilising CT specialist knowledge to interrogate company records and accounts. These enquiries ranged from evasion type cases through to technical disputes on niche topics.

Taran later moved on to the Agent Compliance Team where he led on some of the most complex enquiries into rogue tax agents, as well as providing consultancy advice to caseworkers and being the technical consultant on cases referred for Public Interest Disclosures. During this time, he developed the strategy for identifying troublesome agents and how to best tackle their own tax affairs through targeted interventions utilising various data sources.

All this experience has allowed Taran to develop an in-depth understanding of HMRC enquiry processes and powers, giving him the foundation to understand HMRC’s approach and the potential implications for our clients from the outset.

Away from work Taran is a lifelong Leicester City fan and follows them away whenever possible, as well as playing 11-a-side football himself. He is an avid car enthusiast and enjoys working on his pride and joy during the warmer months.
